COURSE:

This course helps you learn Leave No Trace skills and how to teach these skills. It meets training needed for the Eagle leadership position of responsibility, Outdoor Ethics Guide, and leader specific training. Completion of this course can qualify for requirement #5 for your BSA Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award. Those who complete the course are prepared to:

  1. Understand, demonstrate, and teach Leave No Trace techniques of the 7 LNT Principles to friends, family, scouting groups, and other community groups.
  2. Teach the BSA Leave No Trace 101 Awareness course and general Leave No Trace Awareness classes, and lead activities at Scouting events.
  3. Assist others earn their BSA Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award & Action Awards.
  4. Lead discussions on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic.

      Those completing the course will be BSA Leave No Trace Trainers, recognized by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and the BSA.

Friday 6:00 PM through Saturday 8:00 PM, April 21-22, 2023

WHERE:

Nature Lodge, Trexler Scout Reservation

WHO: 

Unit Leaders for Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships and Youth leaders 14 and older (Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts). We strongly recommend that if a youth attends then one of the unit leaders also attend so they are getting the same training. This course is recommended for the following -

Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts: Age 14 and older who paddle, climb, hike, sail, camp, High Adventure Crews, NYLT participants, Outdoor Ethics Guides, Order of the Arrow members, camp counselors in training, and Camp Staff.

Adult Leaders: Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Crews, Ships, High Adventure contingent leaders, BALOO & IOLS course instructors, District and Council training teams, Camp Staff, camp masters, rangers, Wood Badge participants, Order of the Arrow members, and Commissioners.  

FORMAT:

All participants must attend all in-person sessions at camp and complete assignments to graduate. No refunds after start of course. There will be some individual homework that each participant will need to complete on their own. Because this is a training course to prepare you to teach, each participant will be required to make a 15-minute presentation on a Leave No Trace Principle.

$50.00 per person includes food, training materials, and recognitions

Equipment:

For the in-person instruction: uniform, camp chair, canteen, presentation materials, tent, camping equipment, personal gear, mess kit, hand sanitizer, BSA Medical Parts A and B.

Registration:

THE OUTDOOR ETHICS GUIDE PERFORMS SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Trains others:

  •  Explains to Scouts the relevant requirements for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.
  • Demonstrates how to practice the Outdoor Code, and the Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly! principles to meet advancement requirements.

Provides leadership:

  • Helps the troop plan and conduct an outdoor program that effectively practices outdoor ethics.
  • Mentors den chiefs in the Outdoor Code and practicing Leave No Trace Principles for Kids.
  • Helps Life Scouts understand, plan, and carry out activities or projects meeting conservation service hour requirements.

Supports recognition:

  • Encourages Scouts and leaders to complete the Outdoor Ethics Awareness and Action awards.

Completes self-evaluation:

  • Uses tools to evaluate how well he carried out the responsibilities of outdoor ethics guide. This position of responsibility is also on the approved list of Troop offices for the Eagle rank.
