Hugh Moore Park, Easton, PA
Howdy, Mountain-Folk!
After many lessons-learned from a very successful Webelos Klondike at Hugh Moore Park last year, we are excited for this year's updated event. See below for some frequently asked questions, links, attachments and enthusiasm! :-)
What can I do to get my boys ready for Klondike?
Units that do well seem to be very practiced in basic Scout skills like setting up tarps, building fires, tying knots, team building game practice, etc.) Some of the non-skills advice that I can give you is to keep the patrol sizes small. For instance, if you have eight Scouts in your den, you could consider splitting them into two sleds (it does not cost more to bring two sleds, and if you need a loaner for a second sled, we can find you a loaner, or you can work with your local Boy Scout Troops to borrow a second sled.
Where is Hugh Moore Park?
Below is a link to the GPS coordinates on Google Maps to the park entrance and attached is the flyer for the event as well as some plans to build your own sled.
Park Entrance on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/XoFjPvhrxcR2
(it is basically the intersection of Lehigh Drive and Glendon Hill Rd in Easton)
What if my guys are bad shots at BB?
Back by popular demand, we have included the BB range as part of the event, remember that teamwork and safety count more towards your score than accuracy, so please don't stress if your Scouts don't have much practice with BBs.
Day-of Registration & Parking:
Day-of registration and check in starts at 8:45am and some of the park is undergoing some construction, so consider arriving a little early to work through the parking Logistics. The event starts at 9:45, remember that you will need to pack a lunch for you and your Scouts, (Hey all you BALOO trained adults, think foil-pack! ... we will have campfires.)
We want to make our own sled:
If you Google-Search "Klondike Sled Plans", you could read for days before you find the end of the list. A classic set of plans from Boys Life magazine can be found here: http://media.scouting.org/boyslife/workshop/sledplans.pdf ... I would just replace the instructions for making the "runners" with a set of old skis (check freecycle.org or craigslist, there are tons available). Also, attached is another classic set of plans.
I suck at knots, how do I teach my boys:
May I recommend signing up for one of the knots classes at The University of Scouting? Also, check this awesome article from Boys Life magazine on essential Scout Knots ... complete with videos!!!! http://scoutingmagazine.org/2016/04/tie-essential-scouting-knots/
I'm in! How do I register my boys:
Register online using the double knot system by following this link:

I can't wait to see you there, let's set a record in the number of sleds registered, your boys will have a great time and talk about it all year!
